Chapter Twenty-Six
âI have an idea where we should go first.â That was the only hint Giovanni gave as they climbed into the back of a taxi and drove away from the city.
âShould I be worried?â she asked as the miles from Caffè Vita Nuova grew.
âYou donât trust me?â Giovanni mocked his pain.
âI trust him,â David said.
Diana gently shook Davidâs comment out of her hair. âI donât know you,â she replied.
Giovanni aimed a meaningful smirk at her. âYes you do.â
She turned her attention out the window and tried to focus on the buildings to calm the shiver that ran through her body.
Eventually, buildings and shops distanced themselves and the tree-lined street led through the arch of an imposing wall.
âWhat is that?â Diana asked.
âThe walls of Rome,â Giovanni informed her. âThe Aurelian Walls, built during the reign of the Emperor Aurelian. He walled in the seven hills of Rome to keep barbarian invaders out.â
âDo you just have information like that running around in your head at all times?â
âItâs my job.â He shrugged.
âAnd you love it,â she supplied.
âI really do.â
Outside the walls, four lanes became a winding two-lane road with cypress trees on either side.
After a wide turn, the driver pulled through a small open gate, into a parking lot with two tour buses. As Giovanni leaned forward to speak with the driver, Diana climbed out, a defense against listening to his deep voice utter the language she was finding so romantic in her current state.
But she only felt that way because she was running on adrenaline and caffeine. âExactly.â She nodded with her reasoning. All further emotions were going to be blamed on either of those.
As they walked toward an elaborate villa complex rising up behind a wall of tall hedges, the back of Giovanniâs hand grazed the back of hers, to perhaps get a reading on how she would take the action. When she didnât pull away, that was all the encouragement he needed to intertwine his fingers with her. And while muted questions of right and wrong floated past, she took the intimacy for what it was, a tangible lifeline to the previous evening and the conversations and feelings she wanted to hold onto.
Besides, she was sure at some point, when this was all over, sheâd find that this man was a dream. A harmless flirtation sheâd concocted. Hell, maybe she was losing her mind; sheâd already unearthed David, so why not a man who was the embodiment of Italy? She was being seduced by Rome as it was, why not go all the way? Let herself be persuaded to drown in the opulent history of Rome and a man who swore to seduce her.
âHow old do you feel now, Lu?â David hovered on her other side. âHe looks good on you. Though, Iâm not sure about the shoes. What is it with European men and their shoes?â
Diana raised an eyebrow in his direction; was he really going to talk about another manâs wardrobe? Wasnât he the one who couldnât
