Chapter Twenty-Six

“I have an idea where we should go first.” That was the only hint Giovanni gave as they climbed into the back of a taxi and drove away from the city.

“Should I be worried?” she asked as the miles from Caffè Vita Nuova grew.

“You don’t trust me?” Giovanni mocked his pain.

‘I trust him,’ David said.

Diana gently shook David’s comment out of her hair. “I don’t know you,” she replied.

Giovanni aimed a meaningful smirk at her. “Yes you do.”

She turned her attention out the window and tried to focus on the buildings to calm the shiver that ran through her body.

Eventually, buildings and shops distanced themselves and the tree-lined street led through the arch of an imposing wall.

“What is that?” Diana asked.

“The walls of Rome,” Giovanni informed her. “The Aurelian Walls, built during the reign of the Emperor Aurelian. He walled in the seven hills of Rome to keep barbarian invaders out.”

“Do you just have information like that running around in your head at all times?”

“It’s my job.” He shrugged.

“I really do.”

Outside the walls, four lanes became a winding two-lane road with cypress trees on either side.

As they walked toward an elaborate villa complex rising up behind a wall of tall hedges, the back of Giovanni’s hand grazed the back of hers, to perhaps get a reading on how she would take the action. When she didn’t pull away, that was all the encouragement he needed to intertwine his fingers with her. And while muted questions of right and wrong floated past, she took the intimacy for what it was, a tangible lifeline to the previous evening and the conversations and feelings she wanted to hold onto.

Besides, she was sure at some point, when this was all over, she’d find that this man was a dream. A harmless flirtation she’d concocted. Hell, maybe she was losing her mind; she’d already unearthed David, so why not a man who was the embodiment of Italy? She was being seduced by Rome as it was, why not go all the way? Let herself be persuaded to drown in the opulent history of Rome and a man who swore to seduce her.

‘How old do you feel now, Lu?’ David hovered on her other side. ‘He looks good on you. Though, I’m not sure about the shoes. What is it with European men and their shoes?’

Diana raised an eyebrow in his direction; was he really going to talk about another man’s wardrobe? Wasn’t he the one who couldn’t
